Māmala Hoa has adopted an ancient ‘olelo (saying) said by warriors when preparing for battle as its motto and inspiration. This ‘olelo may be found in Mary Kawena Pukui’s work, ‘Olelo No’eau: Hawaiian Proverbs & Poetical Sayings (Bishop Museum Press, 1983). The ‘olelo is:
E hume i ka malo, e ho’okala i ka ihe
Gird the malo, sharpen the spear
The call here is to be steadfast and alert, to prepare and be prepared for the task, challenge, or conflict at hand.
